Sophia Su

Sophia Su is continuing her studies in The Juilliard School precollege division. She started the piano at age 3, the following year she started the violin. In 2005, Sophia was named third prize in the 2005 Schumann Piano Competition,and performed in the winner’s concert in Dom Pedro V Theatre and participated as guest soloist in the Legislative Council Opening concert. Ms Su received 1st prize in the 26th Concurso Para Jovens Musicos de Competition with the Premio Instituto Cultural Award. Sophia received 1st prize in the 27th Piano Competition for Young Musicians, 1st prize in the four-hands Piano Competition and the recipient of the Premio de Talento Award from the Macau government twice. Ms Su was invited as a guest soloist to perform in the 10th Anniversary of Macau, broadcasted live by CCTV. Ms Su was invited to the opening concert of The 29th Festival Internacional de Musica and Europe Tour concert series in Austria, in Erl, Zurich, and Bruckner Music Festival. In 2016, Sophia was named 3rd prize in the 8th Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists in Germany. Su values the importance of chamber music. She performed in the Carnegie Hall winning the Piano Trio first prize in the International Grande Music Competition and received Grand Prize at the 2017 National Young Artists Chamber Music and Ensemble Competition. Su is active playing the viola with her chamber groups in school and music festivals as well as solo performances.

Spencer Rubin

Spencer began his oboe studies at age 7 and is a student at The Juilliard School Pre-College Division.  He made his Carnegie Hall solo debut in 2015 at the age of 10.  Spencer has received numerous first place awards in international competitions including American Protégé International Competition, Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition where he was invited to perform at Royal Albert Hall in London, Rondo Young Artist (Vanguard) Competition, American Fine Arts Festival, National Young Maestro Competition where he also won the best overall performance award, National League of Performing Arts Competition and American Association for Development of the Gifted and Talented International Young Gifted Musicians Festival.  In addition, Spencer performed with the Gemini Youth Orchestras Symphony Orchestra as the grand prize winner of its concerto competition.  As a chamber musician, he was a winner of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Young Ensembles Program and the New York International Music Competition. Spencer was Principal Oboist of the Gemini Youth Orchestra Symphony.  He attended the Interlochen Arts Camp for two summers as Principal Oboist of both the Orchestra and Wind Symphony and was the runner-up winner of its concerto competition.  He will attend the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra program during the summer of 2018.  Spencer looks forward to joining the “Back to BACH” project in the fall of 2018.

Sarah Ma

Sarah Ma, 16, is a violinist at the Juilliard Pre-College under Masao Kawasaki as a recipient of the Beggs-Dethier Scholarship. As a top prize-winner in numerous competitions, Sarah has performed as a soloist with several orchestras including the Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic, and the Mendelssohn Concerto with the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra, among several others.  She will perform the Brahms Concerto with the Island Symphony Orchestra in June 2019. Previously a full-scholarship student of Elizabeth Faidley at the Manhattan School of Music, she was the youngest winner of the school’s history in both divisions of MSM’s competitions. In 2015-16, Sarah performed on the 1742 ex-David Guarneri del Gesu loaned to her from Florian Leonhard Fine Violins with three orchestras in the US and Italy. Sarah was also a laureate in the prestigious 2017 Cooper International and Blount-Slawson National Violin Competitions. In 2017, she played on WHSV TV representing the Heifetz International Music Institute, where she studied with David and Linda Cerone and Ani Kavafian among others. Previous summer festivals include the 2015 Indiana University Summer String Academy (Mimi Zweig) and the 2016 Summit Music Festival (Aaron Rosand intensive program). In 2018 she studied with Robert Lipsett at Aspen Music Festival and School. Sarah has performed in masterclasses for Ray Chen, Sarah Chang, Stefan Jackiw, Vadim Gluzman, Charlie Siem, and several others. The summer of 2019, she will be attending AMFS, studying with Donald Weilerstein and Robert Lipsett.
