David Liam Roberts

Described as “Prodigiously gifted, displaying an artistic sensibility well beyond his tender years” (Winnipeg Free Press), David Liam Roberts was recently awarded 1st place in the strings category as well as the Grand Award at the 2018 FCMF National Music Festival of Canada. Earlier in 2018, he was also awarded 2nd prize in the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (WMC) McLellan Competition after a performance of Dvorak’s B minor Cello Concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The 18-year-old cellist has also been awarded prizes at the Canadian Music Competition, in addition to numerous scholarships and honors from local competitions in Winnipeg. David Liam began his cello studies at the age of three, and on his fourteenth birthday became one of the youngest winners of the Aikins Trophy Competition, the Winnipeg Music Festival’s highest instrumental honor. Last year, he was awarded the grand prize of the 2017 Virtuosi Concerts Young Artists Program Auditions, which culminated in his fourth appearance as a Young Artist in the series, opening for the Dover Quartet. He has also been awarded the Madeline Gauvin and Berythe Birse scholarships from the WMC Scholarship Competition.
As the winner of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s 2016 Student Soloist Competition, David Liam performed as soloist with the WSO in several concerts at local schools as a part of their “Up Close and Orchestral” tour. He has also appeared as soloist with the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra, in which he served as principal cellist for several years. A seasoned recitalist, he performed a solo recital for the 2015 Agassiz Chamber Music Festival, in addition to having organized and performed seven public solo recitals in the past. He also spends much of his time as a chamber musician, and performed often as a member of the Chroma Quartet from 2014 to 2017. During the 2017-2018 season, he was a frequent substitute cellist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. David Liam currently studies with Hans Jensen and Andrés Díaz at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he holds a full scholarship as the Robert & Andrea Chisholm scholar. He is in his first year of the Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance (Honours) degree., having been a student of Yuri Hooker in Winnipeg for eight years. During the summer of 2018, he was one of only two Canadian cellists participating in the international Morningside Music Bridge program and festival in Warsaw, Poland. He has had lessons and masterclasses with many of the world’s foremost cello pedagogues, including Colin Carr, Laurence Lesser, Zvi Plesser, Wei Yu, Ariel Barnes, Paul Katz and Tian Bonian. He has attended Morningside Music Bridge for four summers and the Meadowmount School of Music during the summer of 2016. An artist dedicated to communicating meaningful ideas through music, he enjoys reading the classics of literature and thinking deeply. David Liam plays a cello that was made for him in 2017 by Canadian luthier, Garth Lee. David joined the "Back to BACH" project in the fall of 2016, serving as Winnipeg's Regional Director. He will be the regional director of Toronto from the fall of 2018, also serving as Canada's Global Development Associate.

Anna Wojcik

Anna Wojcik, 19, is a Polish-Canadian soprano. After graduating from high school, she spent a year studying at the Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. Anna is now working towards her Bachelor of Music degree at the Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she is studying with Jean Macphail. Anna started taking vocal lessons at the age of nine with Kinga Mitrowska. Since then, she has won countless competitions including the 69th Marcella Kochańska-Sembrich Vocal Competition, the Doreen Chaddock Memorial Vocal Scholarship competition, and the NATS Student Vocal Competition. Anna has appeared with orchestras including the Toronto Sinfonietta, the Camerata Ensemble and the Celebrity Symphony Orchestra. From 2014 to 2016, Anna was a soloist in the “Touch of Love” concert with Quo Vadis choir and Camerata Ensemble directed by Krzysztof Jedrysik, which they performed in Mississauga, Brampton, Buffalo, Chicago, and Warsaw. In 2015, Anna sang in Carnegie Hall for the American Protégé Competition Winners Recital. She has been rewarded for her accomplishments by receiving the Emerging Music Artist MARTY Award in 2016. This summer, she participated in the two-week Saarburg International Music Festival and School in Germany. Anna loves sharing her passion with the world is excited to take part in the “Back the BACH” project.

Rich Royce

Twenty-year-old Canadian violinist, Royce Richert, has performed across Canada, as well as in the USA, Italy, Germany and Austria. He has presented Sibelius’ Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.1 with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, and has also appeared as  soloist with the Lions Gate Sinfonia Orchestra and the Smazal String Orchestra, performing Vivaldi’s Summer Concerto and Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D minor. Upcoming season highlights of 2019 will include guest solo appearances with the Durham Chamber Orchestra and Brampton’s The Rose Orchestra in March, as well as a series of solo recitals across B.C. and Ontario through April to June.  A frequent recitalist, Royce has appeared in concert series such as Silk Purse, St. Andrew’s Noon Hour, Clearly Musical Home Concerts, Concerts @100 and Fraser Valley Concerts. He is also winner of the Performing Arts B.C. Competition and the Gabora Prize for “Best Performance” at the Nineteenth Annual Casalmaggiore International Festival in Italy. Royce is currently in his third year of undergraduate studies at The Glenn Gould School of Music under the tutelage of Victor Danchenko. In his spare time, Royce enjoys swimming, reading, cooking, performing for residents’ at retirement homes and spending time with friends over dessert and a good cup of coffee.

Dale Jeong

Dale Jeong is a 16-year-old Cellist who is a scholarship student at the Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. He is currently in the studio of David Hetherington. Dale won multiple awards with Kiwanis Music Festival and Canadian Music Competition, and first prize at the Ontario Music Festival Association’s 2017 Provincial Finals Competition for the Strings Diploma level. He was the grand prize winner of the Oakfield Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition, performing the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra in May, 2018. At the age of 14, Dale became a winner of the 2016/2017 TSYO Concerto Competition, subsequently performing as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thompson Hall in December 2017. Dale was selected to perform in the masterclasses of Hans Jorgen Jensen, Igor Gefter, Adrian Fung, Thimas Wiebe, Richard Lester, Zvi Plessler and Clive Greensmith.
Dale’s past cello teachers include Audrey Nodwell at Vancouver Academy of Music and Susan Gagnon at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. Dale currently plays on an award-winning cello made by Guy Harrison.

Benjamin Loyst

Benjamin Loyst is a young baritone from Vancouver Island who got his start in musical theatre. He was a part of many musical theatre productions in the community before discovering his love for the classical repertoire. Upon graduating high school he moved to Vancouver to study with Diane King at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music. This school offered many wonderful opportunities for Benjamin, including the chance to perform with the VSO Youth Orchestra. Benjamin is very grateful to be currently studying with Stephanie Bogle at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto as the recipient of the Minz Family Foundation scholarship.
